So yes, the revenge would not be a "proportional response". but it would be a "just" one in the eyes of every parent (except the Amish).
So yes, Israel has "moral cover" for their actions so long as the hostages are being held.

It's European guilt-pride felt for victims of the holocaust. the Jews were the actual victims of a genocide, so the charges ring a bit "hollow" in most American and European ears. Especially given the Palestinian tendency to exaggerate human atrocities as opposed to simply presenting the material ones for what they are... a deliberate "dehousing" designed to coerce the Gazans into leaving once the conflict is over (giving them no 'reason' to stay).

In other words, "ethnic cleansing" is more appropriate, IMO. Genocide would have been MUCH easier, had they the "intention".
