Not in my name

  1. I think that many Jews and many Palestinians suffer from the same erroneous beliefs... which is why "not in my name" is a great disavowal of that error.

As Hannah Ardent noted in "Personal Responsibility Under Dictatorship"
“There is no such thing as collective guilt or collective innocence; guilt and innocence make sense only if applied to individuals.” and her recognition of the "banality of evil" that lies within any system.

I also believe that Stanislaw Lem was also correct when he connected the human instinct to kill and humiliate the "other" with the ethics of kitsch, the desire to obscure the evil acts they perform with good intentions like creating a greater society for either Jews or the German Volk. it allows you to outsource the source of your morality , much as a mob does to its' mob leader. To paraphrase what Lem said, all that is required to begin the genocide is to wait for the right Provocation by the "Other"...

So yes, "Not in My Name"... it recognizes and draws attention to these erroneous beliefs. What it does not do however, is draw attention to the culpability of those willing to incite "provocations" and indulge in the resulting death and humiliation that inevitable follows. :(

  2. btw - What do you think of the "Never Again" policies enacted by the post-WWII "Open Society" consensus and the Allport Scale? Is censorship and the application of guilt-pride in the name of "Never Again" justified? Is it right to attempt to re-educate people Vox Populi, Vox Dei style? Off to the re-education camp with you!
